Graduation weekend at George Mason University brings families from across the country, and often from across the world, to Fairfax for two or three days. The ceremony is the easy part. The question that stalls the group chat is dinner: somewhere close to campus, somewhere the grandparents can park, somewhere with food everyone will eat. Here are a few ideas that work.
Keep it close
Campus traffic on commencement days is real. A venue in Fairfax City — five to ten minutes from the Fairfax campus and the EagleBank Arena — means nobody circles a parking garage in their good shoes. SimSim is on Main Street with free parking, which on graduation weekend is a genuine selling point.
A table that fits three generations
Graduation dinners are unusual: the guest of honor is 22, the guests range from 2 to 82, and the family may keep halal, avoid alcohol, or simply prefer a quieter room. Family-style Palestinian and Ukrainian food suits this better than most: grandparents recognize the mansaf or the borshch, cousins fight over the kunafa, and children eat chicken shawarma and syrnyky without complaint. Small touches that land
- A pot of Jerusalem tea at each end of the table before the food comes — it settles a large group faster than anything.
- A dessert table (kunafa, baklava, honey cake) rather than a single cake, so the photos have color and the line moves.
